Wheeling, West Virginia, is a favorite place to go for a 3 or 4 day getaway. Wheeling Downs, with greyhound racing and casino, located on Wheeling Island is great. By all means, make dinner reservations and enjoy a lovely dinner or dinner buffet while watching the races. The service is great, the people friendly and helpful Capitol Music Center, with a variety of entertainment, is within walking distance of Best Western Motel, as are many interesting shops. Wheeling is clean, friendly, and right on the Ohio River. The Suspension Bridge is such a great part of history, and driving on it is always a thrill.

Yes, this is the land of the Deliverance and the Hatfields and the McCoys. But to chalk up West Virginia as a punch line to a hillbilly joke is to do the state an incredible disservice. For those who love the great outdoors, there are few states that can match this corner of Appalachia for scenic beauty and challenging terrain (the state's nickname, the Mountain State, is well earned). Indeed, West Virginia ranks just behind Colorado in the quality of its white-water rapids, and offers splendid skiing -- and it's a whole lot cheaper than Colorado to visit. You'll find plenty of history, too. Harpers Ferry, site of one of the most famous raids in American history, is located here; the raid helped chart West Virginia's course of secession from Virginia and its entrance as a separate state into the Union in 1863. And if you prefer relaxation, the state is home to one of the country's most renowned resorts, The Greenbrier, and to the historic spa city of Berkeley Springs, where the Founding Fathers liked to get away from all -- and you can, too. For sheer value, few states in the country can beat this one.

    West Virginia Independance Hall
Being from NY, I knew nothing about WV history before I came here. Very interesting exhibits and movie about how WV became a state during the civil war as well as other historical exhibits in an historic building. Helpful tourguide as well and very reasonably priced ($2-3). We spent 60-90 minutes If you are interested in history this is well worth the visit.

The city of Wheeling has converted more than 13 miles of former railroad beds into an extraordinary trail experience. The Ohio River Trail runs north-south starting at the city line in South Wheeling and reaches the Pike Island Dam where the trail continues into Brooke County. In Wheeling’s 8.5-mile distance, the trail follows the river, passing many of the city’s industrial sites and crossing through Wheeling Heritage Port. Along the way stop by the National Historic Landmark Wheeling Suspension Bridge, and view the river traffic particularly as barges pass through the locks at Pike Island. The 5 mile Wheeling Creek Trail runs east-west providing opportunities to cross the Hempfield Viaduct high above the creek and experience the Hempfield Tunnel.
